Strategic Plan
ATAWAS Strategic Plans
The Association of Tanzanian Water Suppliers (ATAWAS) is dedicated to enhancing water and sanitation services across the nation. Our strategic plans focus on three key fronts, aiming to address critical challenges in the sector while aligning with global sustainability goals.
Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) present a transformative approach to tackling water and sanitation challenges in Tanzania. ATAWAS aims to:
- Facilitate Innovative Financing Models: Encourage investment from private entities to bridge the funding gap for water and sanitation projects.
- Strengthen Policy Advocacy: Work closely with policymakers to establish a conducive environment for PPP initiatives, ensuring transparency, accountability, and mutual benefit.
- Build Capacity Among Utilities: Equip Water Supply and Sanitation Authorities (WSSAs) with the skills and resources needed to manage PPP projects effectively.
- Enhance Service Delivery: Collaborate with stakeholders to introduce cutting-edge technologies and efficient systems for sustainable water and sanitation management.
By leveraging PPPs, ATAWAS envisions a future where every Tanzanian has access to reliable water and sanitation services, contributing to the nation’s socio-economic development.
Non-Revenue Water (NRW) represents a significant loss in the water supply sector, undermining the financial sustainability of utilities and limiting water availability. ATAWAS is committed to:
- Minimizing Water Losses: Promote the adoption of advanced technologies such as smart metering, leak detection systems, and efficient pipeline management to reduce water losses.
- Building Awareness: Conduct training and workshops to empower utilities with best practices in NRW management and infrastructure maintenance.
- Community Engagement Through Sports: Launch initiatives like the Maji Cup, a nationwide sports event designed to unite communities, raise awareness about water conservation, and promote the importance of managing water resources effectively.
These efforts aim to optimize water usage, reduce wastage, and ensure sustainable management of Tanzania’s precious water resources.
Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) underscores the need for universal access to clean water and sanitation. ATAWAS is actively contributing to this goal through:
- Promoting Good Hygiene Practices: Engage in nationwide campaigns to educate communities about proper hygiene, focusing on reducing neglected tropical diseases such as trachoma and river blindness, which thrive due to poor sanitation.
- Improving Sanitation Infrastructure: Advocate for investment in sanitation facilities that meet global standards, ensuring equitable access in both urban and rural areas.
- Empowering Communities: Collaborate with local leaders and stakeholders to drive behavioral change and foster a culture of hygiene and sanitation.
- Monitoring and Evaluation: Develop robust frameworks to track progress towards achieving SDG 6 and identify areas for improvement.
